Klobuchar Goes Home: Set To Win Gubernatorial Race

news • 2026-01-27

Senator Amy Klobuchar

U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar is returning home to Minnesota where she is expected to win the Minnesota gubernatorial race in November 2026, with analysts and early polling showing her as a heavy favorite in the open contest following Gov. Tim Walz's decision not to seek a third term.

Klobuchar, a four-term Democrat who announced her candidacy on January 29, 2026, quickly consolidated support within the Minnesota DFL Party. She dominated the party's straw poll with about 72% of the vote and has led potential Republican opponents by double digits in surveys. A recent KSTP/SurveyUSA poll from early February showed her ahead of figures like former state Sen. Scott Jensen by 14 points or more, with similar margins against other GOP contenders.

The Cook Political Report shifted the race to "Solid Democrat" in mid-February, citing Klobuchar's strong statewide appeal, her inability to be directly linked to recent state-level controversies, and the fragmented Republican field. Republicans have multiple candidates vying for the nomination, including House Speaker Lisa Demuth, state Rep. Kristin Robbins, and others, but none have emerged as a clear frontrunner capable of closing the gap.

Klobuchar's entry came after Walz abruptly ended his reelection bid in early January, amid a statewide fraud scandal and growing political pressures. Her campaign has emphasized standing up to federal immigration enforcement tactics--particularly in light of the January killings of Minnesota residents Alex Pretti and Renée Good by CBP agents--while promising to address state issues like affordability and unity.

If elected, Klobuchar would become Minnesota's first female governor and would appoint a successor to her Senate seat, potentially triggering a special election. The general election is set for November 3, 2026, with primaries on August 11. Filing for candidates remains open through early June.

Political observers note that Minnesota has not elected a Republican governor since 2002, and Klobuchar's consistent statewide victories, most recently in 2024, position her strongly to maintain Democratic control of the governorship. The race has drawn national attention as part of broader midterm dynamics under the Trump administration.
