Representative Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick resigned from her congressional seat on Tuesday, just moments before she was scheduled to be sanctioned by the House's Ethics Committee. The Republican led chamber was scheduled to sanction her over allegations of fraudulent campaign financing activities.
Cherfilus-McCormick who has represented Florida's 20th congressional district since January 11, 2026, came under recent scrutiny for improper use of constituent funds. Her allegations include money laundering, and attempt to commit money laundering. She was expected to retain her seat in the upcoming November 2026 elections.
Her resignation brings the total number of house congressional resignations for improper conduct this year to three (3). Her resignation follows Representative Eric Salwell's, D-CA, resignation early last week following allegations of sexual misconduct throughout his political career. Her resignation also follows former Representative Tony Gonzales', R-Tx, who resigned following allegations of sexual misconduct with a staffer who later took her own life.
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick's resignation is no shock as the allegations against her surfaced last year. The ongoing investigation culminated early this year after which, the House formally moved to sanction her with a scheduled vote.
