Denver Jet Way Walker Identified

Breaking • 2026-05-11

Michael Mott, reportedly breached airport security by scaling a perimeter fence and entering the secured airfield.

A harrowing incident at Denver International Airport (DEN) on Friday night, May 9, 2026, saw a Frontier Airlines flight strike and kill an individual who was walking on Runway 17L during takeoff. The flight, bound for Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), was forced to abort its takeoff, resulting in an engine fire and smoke within the cabin, necessitating an emergency evacuation of all passengers and crew.

The individual, identified as Michael Mott, reportedly breached airport security by scaling a perimeter fence and entering the secured airfield. Air traffic control audio captured the pilot reporting the collision and subsequent engine fire to the tower, stating, "Tower, Frontier 4345, we're stopping on the runway. Uh, we just hit somebody... we have an engine fire." The pilot later reported smoke in the aircraft, leading to the decision to evacuate passengers on the runway using emergency slides.

Preliminary reports indicate that 12 passengers sustained minor injuries during the evacuation, with five individuals requiring hospitalization. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is gathering information about the evacuation procedures to determine if they warrant a formal safety investigation. Runway 17L was closed following the incident to allow for the ongoing investigation.

The Denver airport CEO, Phil Washington, characterized the event as a "horrible and preventable tragedy." Investigations are being led by local law enforcement, with support from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), focusing on how the individual bypassed security measures and gained access to the runway. The identity of the deceased individual is being handled by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

While the focus of the investigation is on the security breach and the circumstances surrounding the individual's presence on the runway, this incident also raises questions about airport security protocols and the potential for such breaches in highly controlled environments. The NTSB's review of the evacuation process will also shed light on the procedures followed during the emergency. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected to be released as they become available.
